Should we forcefully try to sleep

by | Jan 19, 2024 | Uncategorized

Sleep, in order to “arrive”, requires us to do nothing, unlike many other things in life. For most of us, most of the time, we get into bed, close our eyes and sleep comes, without much effort. Some of us go to great lengths to try to get some sleep. We “require” ourselves to fall asleep, take special breaths, listen to special music, put on certain scents. Some even arrange the room in a very special way. If we fall asleep at the end then a belief develops that only thanks to these behaviors did the long-awaited sleep come. But in fact, we build dependence on ourselves over time.

In fact, when I strive to achieve something that I have no control over then I actually keep it away from me. When I try very hard to fall asleep, and it does not happen there is a gap between what I wanted to happen and what really happened. So I am more stressed, the body is more stimulated and the thoughts are running. Sleep just moves away from me. So, paradoxically, the right thing to do is to try to adopt a “no one promised me I would sleep today” attitude. Do not try to “force” myself to fall asleep.
